A whirlwind of a year

Mad Biker has been collaborating with Andrew on motorcycle parts since 2016. Towards the conclusion of the 2022 season, Andrew approached our team expressing his interest in entrusting us with his engine tuning responsibilities. Being the sole RD350 YPVS amidst a fleet of TZR250s and lacking a development-sharing counterpart, Andrew perceived himself trailing behind the TZR models. Recognizing that the RD has not been renowned for its precision in handling and with the TZRs advancing in engine development, he saw little advantage in the additional 100cc engine capacity. The objective for the 2023 season was to reposition him within the top ten positions, where he believed he rightfully belonged.
During the winter of 2023, we undertook extensive modifications, essentially replacing every component and incorporating our porting specifications into the engine. Recognizing that the bike may not match the TZR in braking and handling, our focus was to, at the very least, provide a competitive edge on the straight. The 2023 season brought its share of challenges, including component failures and an injury following a crash, preventing Andrew from achieving a consistent performance. Despite setbacks, certain races hinted at the potential for success. Notably, a top-six finish at Pembury in round 2 surpassed his target of a top-10 placement. The bike showcased a strong performance amidst unforeseen challenges such as a cracked flywheel.

Undoubtedly, the Rocket had been put back in Rocket Valve. Although the bike may have been lacking in handling, its strong performance on the straights became evident as no TZR on the grid could match the RD350 once the throttle was opened. This was particularly evident during the September meeting at Snetterton, where the bike flexed its muscle on the lengthy straights. While facing a disadvantage in the slower infield section, the closely contested laps made for thrilling racing, with Andrew briefly holding 2nd place. His best finish was 4th in the Past Masters class.

In summary, Andrew significantly surpassed his own expectations in 2023. Operating within the front group of the Past Masters when conditions allowed and securing a victory in the Blue Haze class added the perfect finishing touch. The revamped engine provided him with a competitive edge, prompting us to extend our partnership into 2024
